Diary, 1849-1851.

His journal was kept from March 1849 to January 1851 on a journey to San Francisco, California via the Isthmus of Panama, and back. Daily entries record problems encountered in the complicated passage to California, and problems encountered after arriving in San Francisco to prospect for gold. Hastings includes descriptions of many South American ports, and of camp sites set up at various diggings. Also included at the back of the volume are routes to two digging sites and a short dictionary of Indian (?) words. An electrostatic copy, with marginalia, of the entire journal is filed in the miscellaneous manuscripts boxes.
